Highlights of FEDESSA Tradeshow, Oct 2019

October 11, 2019

The FEDESSA Tradeshow and Conference was held over the 1-2nd of October 2019 in the heart of London. With famed Westminster Abbey as our backdrop, the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre proved a fantastic venue for two days of seminars, networking and discussion. Please scroll to the bottom to see more photos from the event.

It was a jam-packed two days filled with incredible speakers and topics that ranged from automation, security and even ‘What Millennials Think of Self Storage.’ Following seminar discussions on automation, Janus Europe had lots of delegates stop by our stand to see it in action in the form of our innovative Nokē Smart Entry System. Our Nokē experts Juan Moreno and Paul Shepherd showed how Nokē could make your facility management easier, more convenient and the most secure in the industry. The whole sales team, with their unparalleled knowledge of self-storage development in over 40 European countries, were also present. They were there to offer insights to the European market, as well as advice for new operators looking to set up their own facility. The Janus team is always here to help, and you can get in touch though this link.

The European Self-Storage Industry Report, produced by the SSA and JLL, provided many interesting and useful takeaways for operators and suppliers alike. The UK remains the country with the most amount of facilities, followed by France and then Spain. There was industry growth over the least year, though the increase in growth was comparably smaller than in previous years. Fears over economic and political uncertainty indicates growth will likely slow over the next 12 months, though the majority of operators remain optimistic that probability will increase.

For all those designing, constructing and investing in new facilities in the new year, sustainability will play a bigger role than ever before. By the end of 2020, all new buildings will be required to be Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. As corporate social responsibility becomes a bigger part of our industry, we are seeing a shift towards operators retro-fitting their facilities and ensuring that sustainability plays an integral role in their operations. As Janus Europe are ISO 14001 certified and committed to reducing our corporate carbon footprint, we are delighted to see this become a growing trend in the industry.

The first day was capped off with a Networking Dinner, held at the world-famous Natural History Museum and was sponsored by Basil Fry & Company. The Hintze Hall proved to be a fabulous venue that provided the perfect space for networking and socialising.

Janus Europe was proud to remain the major sponsor of the Tradeshow, and to host the Awards Dinner on the final evening. It was a wonderful evening with great entertainment in the form of a youth choir and a mind-reader, and was the perfect end to a busy two days!

Congratulations to all the finalists! The winners were:

  1. Facility of the Year – Less Mess Warsaw
  2. Manager of the Year – Rudolf Feidler, Zeitlager
  3. Extraordinary Achievement – Robin Greenwood, Storage King
  4. Innovation Award – Attic Self Storage Virtual Assistant
  5. Charity Initiative – Big Yellow Foundation

All-in-all, it was the most successful tradeshow ever held. With over 700 delegates, opportunities to learn about the industry, network with industry and business experts, and to have discussions about industry progression were greater than ever before. Thanks to the SSA for an excellently put-together event, great photos and to everyone who attended. We are already excited for the 2o2o FEDESSA Conference which will be held in Portugal.
